This session will look at the learning from two bottom-up initiatives where local partnerships are making a real difference.

Cwmni Bro Cymunedol Ffestiniog brings together a community of 13 successful social enterprises and businesses to develop sustainable opportunities for the area, including the creative, care, environment, building and sustainable tourism sectors. (www.cwmnibro.cymru)

The Carbon Co-op is leading a partnership with URBED, with funding from the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, to deliver “People Powered Retrofit”, a householder-led approach to domestic energy efficiency retrofit in Greater Manchester. (carbon.coop)

  • How can local social enterprises, community businesses and co-operatives work together for mutual benefit and to achieve impact?

John DawsonAs Head of Social Investment Programmes at Power to Change, John oversees the programmes that have elements of social investment in them, including the More than a Pub programme, Power to Change’s Community Led Housing work, its Community Shares work and Community Energy programmes. John has a history of working with numerous community organisations on business planning and raising finance. Prior to joining Power to Change, John worked at Locality supporting their members with community led housing, business planning, governance, accessing finance and community share offers. John is also a licensed community shares practitioner.

Ceri Cunnington

Ceri has wide experience of working with and developing community projects through Bowydd and Rhiw Communities First; first as a Development Worker and then as Coordinator. He was also one of the founders of the social enterprise, Antur Stiniog, back in 2007 and worked as its General Manager between 2012-2015, before moving on to work with GISDA, a charity supporting young people. Since 2017, Ceri has been working on developing the vision for Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog, on promoting cooperation between social businesses and enterprises, and developing the foundational economy.

Father to two young girls, Ceri’s interests include mountaineering, music, culture and heritage.

Jonathan Atkinson

Jonathan is co-founder of Carbon Co-op, a member-led social enterprise based in Greater Manchester that works with people to radically reduce their carbon emissions in their homes and communities.

Much of Carbon Co-op’s activity has focussed on delivering deep retrofit works and after an extensive service design process they launched the new People Powered Retrofit service in 2019.
