Social adVentures

Social adVentures is a nationally recognised, community-based social enterprise headquartered in Salford, Greater Manchester. Established in 2011 as one of the UK’s pioneering public service mutuals spun out from the NHS, it has since grown into a trusted provider of public services, dedicated to helping people live healthier, happier lives.

Its activities span health and wellbeing, early years education, children’s social care, community development, social prescribing, and employment support.

Model, Markets and Money

Social adVentures operates a mixed-income, values-led business model. This includes:

  • Traded income from fee-paying services such as childcare through its nurseries and forest schools, and wellbeing programmes.
  • Contracted services funded by local authorities, NHS bodies, and other public commissioners. These include social prescribing, loneliness reduction, physical activity and adult learning programmes.
  • Social investment, which has enabled property acquisition and expansion of residential care services.

All profits are reinvested into community programmes, ensuring financial sustainability while delivering measurable social impact.

Over the past decade, Social adVentures has grown its impact at an astonishing rate. It has expanded beyond its initial NHS contract, secured multiple new funding streams, and achieved a remarkable 30% growth in a single year. It has been recognised at the SE100 Social Impact Awards and named Health and Social Care Social Enterprise Winner at the SEUK Awards, reflecting its ability to turn bold ideas into real, measurable change.

Name:Scott Darraugh

Title :CEO

Scott Darraugh is a social entrepreneur, changemaker, and relentless advocate for community-driven solutions. His career is built on a radical commitment to people and place, ensuring that healthcare, wellbeing, and opportunity are not dictated by postcode or budget cuts.
A decade into his career with the NHS, Scott became disillusioned by the deepening inequalities and ever-shrinking resources available to those who needed them most. He saw communities in Salford and beyond struggling – not because of a lack of resilience, but because of systemic failures that left them without the support they deserved. Rather than accept the status quo, Scott took a risk; he walked away from the constraints of traditional healthcare models and, in 2011, founded Social adVentures, one of the UK’s first NHS social enterprises.
At the height of the banking crisis, when businesses and public services alike were reeling, Scott proved that innovation could thrive even in adversity. Under his leadership, Social adVentures has redefined what public health and social care can look like. From mental health services delivered in a thriving community garden centre, to a network of Ofsted Outstanding day nurseries, the organisation has built sustainable, high-impact initiatives that support some of the UK’s most deprived communities.
Scott’s leadership is rooted in action, ensuring that businesses and public services work for, not against, the communities they serve. His influence extends far beyond Salford, with his expertise sought out by national organisations and boardrooms shaping the future of social enterprise in the UK. He doesn’t just talk about change – he builds it, funds it, and fights for it. His work proves that business can be a force for good, that healthcare can be reimagined, and that the best way to fix a broken system is to create something better.
