Futures’ mission is to unlock the true potential of people of all ages by leading change in careers, advice, skills and training. Rated by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’, Futures delivers to its beneficiaries and clients through a range of means, employing three hundred people and working in partnership with others. It operates the National Careers Service across the East Midlands and the East of England.

Futures is a growing organisation, expanding its offer by product and geographically. Its entrepreneurial and enterprising approach to generating new income streams is crucial to future growth.

As such, the organisation is proactive in identifying new funding pots to deliver a wide-range of work which builds on its core strengths. Futures’ offer extends beyond its history of designing and delivering careers guidance services. As sector experts, the skills it has are increasingly called upon to provide analysis of changes in the sector, to inform national strategies and decision-making. In recent years Futures has developed a subsidiary company, Futures for Business, a training provider arm of the group.

John joined Futures as CEO in May 2013, having previously been Director of Economic Development at Nottingham City Council. He has steered the organisation to increase its level of impact on individuals and the economy, which was recognised in Futures becoming the first National Careers Service in the country to be judged as being Outstanding by Ofsted in January 2017. With over 20 years’ experience in the employment and skills sector, John is passionate about supporting people into employment and is a strong advocate for social mobility. Having already grown the company by a third, John is committed to a values-led approach to growth that sees Futures developing new partnerships to enable its impact on individuals and employers to further increase.
John is the Vice Chair of Careers England and is a trustee and non-executive director at several not for profit organisations, as well as being a school governor.
